The Always Formidable Philadelphia Eagles
In 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles took the field for their first game as an official part of the National Football League (NFL). They were crushed by the New York Giants, starting a trend that would carry the team through their first couple of years in the league.
In 1935, the NFL draft was instituted at the suggestion of the Eagles general manager, and remains in effect to this day. 1939 saw the Philadelphia Eagles playing in the first ever televised football game. Other than these two events, the Eagles had a very uneventful time in the 1930’s, losing most games and picking up a record for the worst season ever when they managed to win only one game, a record they held until 1976.
In 1940, the Philadelphia Eagles went through a transformation. The owners of the Eagles traded teams with the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, although each area kept their own names. The switch did not immediately benefit the Eagles as they still lost more than they won during the next couple of years.
Player shortages in 1943 caused several teams to merge to ensure enough players. The Eagles merged with the Steelers and became part of the popular “Steagles.” It was the first time the Eagles had a winning season in the history of the franchise, but the arrangement was only temporary and the teams split at the end of the season.
After that first winning season, the Philadelphia Eagles experienced a turn around, managing several more winning seasons, two of which ended up with them victorious in the NFL Championship Game. Since then, the Eagles have suffered defeat after defeat, and have had some great winning seasons. The ups and downs experienced by the team keep fans on the edge of their seats.
The Philadelphia Eagles have been to the Super Bowl twice, losing both times, and making them the only NFC East team that does not have a Super Bowl win. Despite this, Eagles fans are some of the most devoted in the league.
Traditionally a rowdy bunch, they have gained a reputation by doing things like throwing snowballs at Santa Claus, booing the Easter Bunny, fighting, and taking great joy in injuries sustained by the other teams. However, with the construction of Lincoln Financial Field, the new stadium, many of the “problem” fans have stopped going to games because of higher prices. Yet there is still an energy and fierce loyalty to their team felt at every single home game.
Watching the Philadelphia Eagles play football is an experience like no other. You never know how the game will end and the fans provide plenty of entertainment themselves.
